Charleston Rally
Volunteers of Save a Kitty FCP rallied at the Capitol in Charleston on Thursday, January 28, 2010 in support of our Senate Bill 189, to permit registered feral cat colonies. This bill would end the killing of feral and free-roaming cats and instead sterilize and vaccinate them. If you want to support our bill, please call your Senators and House members and ask them to support this bill. Special thanks to Senator Donna Boley for introducing it for us. We will be in Charleston again on Thursday, February 25th to rally with FOHOWV. |

70 lives saved !
In the last three (3) weeks Save a Kitty FCP volunteers coordinated a total of 70 sterilizations for a caretaker who was completely overwhelmed with kitties to take care of. The cats were all very healthy. We are so proud to have been a part of this. The cats are now sterilized, vaccinated and enjoying their lives. No more babies to worry about! This is the reason our volunteers work so hard to raise funds for these cats. They have a right to a decent life even though their original owners didn't think so. They were all abandoned or offspring of the cats who were abandoned. We would like to thank our supporters for making this possible. |

Senate Bill 560
Unfortunately, Senate Bill 560 did not pass this year. Save a Kitty FCP has officially kicked off their 2008-2009 campaign to get this bill passed. It would implement TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) statewide and save thousands of feral cats and free-roaming cats from dying in our state shelters each day. WV taxpayers spend over 3 million dollars annually picking up, sheltering, feeding stray animals only to have the animal euthanized because it was not adopted. This money could be better spent sterilizing these cats and saving their lives. Did you know your money was being spent this way???? Please contact your Senators and House members and tell them to pass any bill relating to "The care and management of feral cats". It is the proven method for over-population control and is the most cost-effective and humane method. We need your help to make this happen. We thank you and so do the millions of cats living on their own. Kandi |

We Need Your Help! (Senate Bill 560)
There is currently pending legislation (SB560) in the State Capital in Charleston for a WV mandate for the "Care and Management of Feral Cats" Please help us get this passed by calling your Senators and House members for the passing of this bill. It would allow all feral cats to be sterilized and released under Save a Kitty TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) program or any program practicing TNR. Feral cats are dying by the thousands as we speak. We need your help in saving their lives! Please call Senator Larry Edgell at (304)357-7827 and ask him to support this very important bill. Thank you. |

Insulated Shelters needed!
To anyone willing to volunteer their time, we desperately need insulated shelters built for some of our colonies of cats and kittens. The winter months will be upon us in no time and these animals need a warm box to lay down in, to survive the winter. If you are good at carpentry and are willing to help us, we have the materials and the building plans. Please contact one of our Board Members or call Kandi @ 482-8987. Bless You! |

Funds Needed!
We have been asked to help spay/neuter 53 cats/kittens being cared for by an elderly gentleman. We do not currently have these kinds of funds. If you can help, please send your tax-deductible donation to: Save a Kitty FCP, Inc., PO Box 1442, Parkersburg, WV 26102. We are trying to prevent these animals from being rounded up and taken to a shelter, where they will most likely not get adopted. Please help! |

We are working very hard!
Just a note to let all of our caretakers know that we are working very hard to schedule sterilization surgeries for everyone that needs their colonies/cats altered. We are limited to a certain number of appointments each week and our clinics have been few due to various reasons, i.e. willing veterinarians, funds, etc. Please be patient and we will continue to work through our list of cats/kittens needing fixed. Also, we are a referral service only for cats/kittens needing adopted. We do not have a large foster network, therefore; we can not take cats or kittens from everyone. You are actually the foster parent and we will refer calls to you as we receive them. We truly appreciate your understanding as we try to accomplish surgeries and vaccines for these wonderful animals. They deserve a decent chance at life and we appreciate you caring for them. Thank you. |

Rummage Sale Items.
We have had several individuals inquire as to why we don't publish the drop off location for the rummage sale items. Believe it or not, we actually had cats and kittens dropped off last year. They were turned loose to run and kittens were confined to boxes. I continue to be amazed at how some individuals can treat a living, breathing life. They must answer to only one being. If you donated items in 2005, the drop off location is the same. If this is the first year, please call us and we will provide the location. Kandi @ 482-8987 or Tina @ 422-0182 or Sue @ 482-8631 Thanks for your understanding. |

Reminder !
Just a reminder to all our colony caretakers, with the cold weather upon us, your cats need a little extra help in keeping warm. Shelters with cedar chips and straw will help insulate the cat's body heat and keep them warmer in this cold weather. Shelters with insulation are the best. If you need to provide a shelter in an emergency, a rubbermaid tote with a styrofoam cooler inside (along with straw) is perfect for them. Just cut a hole large enough for them to enter and exit. Remember to provide plenty of food and fresh water, as it quickly freezes. We always need help taking care of these wonderful animals. If you are willing to feed a colony on a daily basis or help out in some way, contact one of our Board members. Bless you for caring. |

Are we a humane society?
If Mahatma Gandhi was right and the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by how its animals are treated, then it is time we rejected the mindless catch-and-kill methodology of the past. We must embrace preventive nonlethal strategies that reveal that at our core we truly are a humane society. TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return) works! |

Another Success!
Save a Kitty Feral Cat Program, Inc. set up their education table at Pet Supplies Plus on Grand Central Avenue on Saturday, July 9. Alot of information was given out and T-shirts were sold. The total raised was $128.15. These funds will be placed in our spay/neuter fund to continue our important work for homeless and feral cats and kittens. We also received some cat food donations. Most importantly, we are continuing to get the word out on how to care for feral cats and kittens and how important it is to spay and neuter them. A sad way to look at this is, that for every kitten born another one dies. Please help us work on eliminating their continued suffering. Thanks to Pet Supplies Plus for allowing us to set up shop and the volunteers who assisted that day, Judy Deem, Jenny Atkinson, Tina Gilbert, Ed Bays and Kim. See you at our next site. News is forthcoming. |

Clarification of Services
Save a Kitty Feral Cat Program, Inc. does not take cats or kittens. We do not have a facility to do this. We work strictly with feral or homeless cats/kittens and the animals from this group that are potentially adoptable. As a non-profit group, we try to raise money to have these animals spayed/neutered to stop the endless cycle of kittens. We train citizens how to use humane traps to catch these animals for transport to the veterinarian for spay/neuter surgery. They are then returned to the place they were trapped, for caretaking (food, water, shelter) by the persons/persons that have been feeding them. We do not relocate cats/kittens. We help citizens who want to help the cats. We will not trap and transport cat/kittens to the humane society or to another location. Most feral (wild) cats/kittens are euthanized because they are not adoptable. We as a group do not believe in killing these animals, because they once belonged to irresponsible people who have no conscience. They don't deserve that. Their life is hard enough. If you are feeding stray or feral cats and would like to get them altered and then continue caring for them, we can help you. We assist caretakers and their colonies of cats when funds are available and as there turn arises. We need monetary donations to continue our work and ask that citizens who are helped by the program return some volunteer time to us by helping other caretakers and cats. If you are interested in participating in any way, please contact one of our board members listed on the website. |

Services We Offer
Save a Kitty Feral Cat Program, Inc. was established to train citizens how to caretake stray homeless/feral cats and kittens on basic care. We do not take cats or kittens. We help you humanely trap them in order to spay/neuter and end the cycle of litters. We assist with shelter and sometimes food donations when our funds allow us to. Many residents are feeding several stray/feral cats and need help with humane trapping, feeding and providing shelter for these precious animals. If is not their fault that irresponsible pet owners abandoned them. Sterilizing allows them to live their lives peacefully and eliminates the behaviors associated with mating. All sterilized cats that are unadoptable are returned to their location to lives out their lives and are cared for by colony caretakers. We do not believe in euthanizing a cat or kitten because it is wild or scared of humans, only in the case of a serious illness or injury when they are suffering. We offer sterilization services and rabies vaccine to these animals. Any service above this, including Feline Leukemia, FIV and FIP testing and Distemper vaccines are the responsibility of the caretaker or the Adopter. If you need assistance, please contact one of our Board Members. |

K-Mart Fundraiser
Save a Kitty Feral Cat Program, Inc. held a fundraiser at the Vienna K-Mart, Saturday, May 14. A total of $135.00 was raised before we were rained out early afternoon. Raffle tickets, baked goods and education packets were distributed to citizens trying to deal with the homeless/feral cats they have been feeding. Hundreds of these cats are routinely dumped by irresponsible people who have no conscience. Many compassionate citizens begin feeding them and before they know it, have many mouths to feed. The program educates and trains citizens how to humanely trap the animals for sterilization surgeries and then daily caretaking. All inquirers are extremely excited about our program because they have nowhere else to turn. Thanks to everyone who worked the education table and also those who contributed their baking skills and work skills to make it a success. Thank You !! |
